Murder, mystery and intrigue take the stage at YCDS

Something is afoot at York Country Day School as we get ready to open our first theatrical production in the brand new Ann B. Barshinger Center for the Arts. The Hound of the Baskervilles: A Comic Thriller Starring Shirley Holmes and Jennie Watson opens this evening at 7:00 p.m. The play centers on Sir Henry Baskerville’s desire to solve his family’s curse. He is encouraged to seek out the help of Sherlock Holmes, but instead is helped by Holmes’ and John Watson’s nieces, Shirley and Jennie. It is a rollicking story full of mystery, intrigue, and fun.

One of the best things about theatre is that it takes many people collaborating and working together to bring a show to life. Over the past six weeks, the ABC has been alive with students and faculty transforming the space into Victorian London. Our fourteen actors have rehearsed, learned lines and blocking, and discovered characters. Behind the scenes, our crew moves set pieces, runs sound and light cues, and makes sure things run seamlessly. Evan Sherr’s sound design class researched and provided our sound effects, while Stacey Filippone’s digital arts class designed our logo, posters, and tshirts. Michelle Statella’s art classes painted the set that was built by students lead by Stephen March. Many helped hang new curtains and learn about the brand new lighting and sound system.
Theatre has the wonderful ability of bringing together many people to work on and produce a common, positive product. Together we have solved problems, helped each other grow, and joined forces to tell a story. We’ve learned to listen to each other onstage and off and worked to collaborate and share ideas. We hope to see you at the show! You’ll be sure to laugh, ponder, and feel the chills of the mystery of the hound!

The show runs November 10, 11 &12 at 7 p.m. in the Ann B. Barshinger Center for the Arts. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 717-815-6700.
